Particulate filter

Principle of operation

The filter has the form of a spatial structure with a highly developed surface. Solid particles settle on porous walls or fibers made of metal or ceramics. The performance of a properly functioning filter is in the range of 85% to 100%, which means that no more than 15% of the original solids content enters the atmosphere. .


The particles accumulating in the filter cause its gradual clogging, which causes the filter to lose its efficiency. The filter life is influenced by: driving style – driving on an underheated engine, as well as driving on short distances and the oil and fuel used. A more advanced solution is self-cleaning of the filter consisting in the catalytic combustion of particles when the filter reaches a sufficiently high temperature (the particles burn at a temperature higher than 600 ° C). This system is called passive regeneration.

Construction of DPF

The main part of DPF is the insert made of ceramic material similar in structure to the inserts in catalysts (cross-section – honeycomb). However, the channels in the cartridge have a larger diameter and porous walls. In addition, they are coated with aluminum and cerium oxides, which are the foundation for platinum particles (platinum chloride and derivatives of organometallic compounds, i.e. what constitutes the reaction catalyst)

If the construction of the filter insert resembles a tubular boiler, then some of the ends (on both sides) are plugged. Exhaust gases wanting to pass through such an obstacle must squeeze through the pores leaving larger particles trapped inside the blinded channels.

There are also other DPF filter structures, e.g. resembling a cylindrical air filter with tapers narrowing towards the outlet. However, the principle of operation is always the same.
